Transforming the Great Room with a Stunning Furniture Piece
Upon entering this Birmingham home, you’re naturally drawn to the Great Room, where a custom furniture piece immediately captures your attention. This custom-made china cabinet serves as both a stunning focal point and a practical solution, balancing the room aesthetically while addressing a storage challenge.
Designed to showcase the homeowner’s cherished heirlooms, the cabinet was carefully planned with their input. We collaborated closely with the clients, measuring and inventorying their collection of china, crystal glassware, and silver service to ensure the piece could house everything perfectly. Working with a local cabinet maker, we developed a modern design that complements the existing architectural elements of the home.
To strike the perfect balance between display and discretion, the homeowner requested a way to showcase their treasures without making them fully visible. Seeded glass was chosen to lightly diffuse the view, allowing the crystal to shimmer subtly while maintaining a timeless aesthetic. Adding character to the cabinet, the seeded glass doors feature a leaded design inspired by a cabinet detail in the home’s kitchen—a feature the homeowner loved.
Integrated LED lighting was installed to highlight the collection while reflecting light off the mirrors placed on the back of the cabinet. Since the Great Room lacks windows, mirrors were also set into the open countertop area of the cabinet to reflect natural daylight streaming in from the adjacent doors, enhancing the room’s brightness and ambiance.
Completed in 2024, this thoughtfully crafted china cabinet layers materials like glass and mirror to create a sophisticated and functional piece that enhances the overall warmth and elegance of the space.
Silver Leaf Walls
Who wouldn’t want to fall asleep in this luxurious sanctuary?
Taking inspiration from the home’s existing dining room, this unique and upscale wall treatment transforms the space into a true showstopper. Originally designed for the homeowner’s grown son, the room’s unpredictable wall finish has become a favorite among guests, who are often in awe and eager to claim it during visits.
To achieve this extraordinary look, the design team partnered with a local artisan group to craft an environment that couldn’t be replicated in any store. Through meticulous sampling, the artisans collaborated with the designers and clients to perfect the coloration and sheen. Once the samples were approved, the labor-intensive process of gilding the room began.
Small squares of silver leaf were carefully applied to the walls, one by one, piece by piece. An antique patina was then brushed over the silver, striking a delicate balance between a masculine and refined aesthetic.
The result is a breathtaking space that seamlessly reflects the modern interior design style found throughout this Birmingham home, completed in 2024.
