Detroit Home Design Awards

On March 24, 2015, we attended the 11th Annual Detroit Home Magazine Design Awards and are proud to announce we won six awards! Listed below are the project statements, pictures of the awards, and images of the corresponding award winning projects!

Custom Tree House (Outdoor Building/Playhouse)

Game on! We were asked to have some fun and design a tree house for a family with young boys as part of a charity fundraising project. The family has a huge love of ice hockey and every year they put in an ice rink for family games. The problem was they had nowhere to keep supplies and change clothing. That hockey rink is now adjacent to this new, beautiful tree house! In the winter, they now have a locker room with benches and lockers in the lower section of the tree house. The upper section provides the enlarged tree house “great room” along with a climbing rope, future rock climbing wall, and zip line! The owner requested the material to reflect the character of the old Canadian hockey houses he grew up with as a child himself.

Small Addition (Kitchen, Family Room, Nook)

This home addition was intended to expand the home to provide the necessary space needed for the growing new family. The existing kitchen was gutted, expanded and opened up on to a family room and nook area. The new family room opens up to a new screened porch that takes advantage of the previously unused side-yard. The much needed new rear entry provides the family a space for their laundry room and is now the primary entry point from a detached garage. Great care was taken to ensure the home’s new detailing could have been this way originally. The existing home had aluminum siding and trim which concealed the original millwork and shingles. Careful attention was taken to replace and repair these original materials wherever possible, providing a seamless exterior character.
